The Ukrainian Patent and Trademark office (The Ukrpatnet) provides statistical data on objects of intellectual property filed per each month, in comparison to the same month of the previous year. It is very interesting to compare those figures. Even more curious it is to examine the situation with intellectual property during the war in Ukraine.

So, here are the figures we calculated based on the information provided.

Inventions: from March until July 2021: 1431 patent applications, the same period of 2022: 1051 patent applications.

Trademarks: from March until July 2021: 17146 trademark applications, the same period of 2022: 7572 trademark applications.

Utility Models: from March until July 2021: 1633 applications, the same period of 2022: 787 applications.

Designs: from March until July 2021: 788 design applications, the same period of 2022: 181 design applications.

International trademark registrations under Madrid Agreement/ Protocol: March – July of 2021: 4628 registrations, the same period of 2022 - 3639 registrations.

As we see, the UPTO tries to do its best during the war. It especially requires attention that it did not suspend its work from the beginning of the war with russia, nevertheless all the hard days in Kyiv.

Moreover, it is important to remember that the IP legislation of Ukraine is based on the first-to-file, not first-to-use

principle.

We encourage companies and entrepreneurs to look to the future. The situation in Ukraine will change. It is much easier and less expensive to maintain IP rights than to restore or re-acquire lost rights.
